What the work actually is
At its core, this career is a series of conversations. People sit down with you because something in their financial life is unresolved, a growing family with no protection in place, a retirement account nobody has looked at in years, a business that would stop if the owner did. Your job is to understand the situation, explain the options in language a normal person can follow, and help them act on it.
Around those conversations sits the rest of the work: getting licensed, learning products well enough to explain them plainly, following up, handling applications and underwriting, and staying in touch with the people you have already helped.
How you get paid
This is commission-based. There is no salary, no hourly rate, and no base pay. You are compensated when business is written and placed, and nothing is guaranteed. In practical terms, that means the first several months are usually about building skill and activity, not income.
We are not going to put earnings figures on this page. Anyone showing you income numbers for a business you have not started yet is selling you something.
What it takes to get started
A state life and health insurance license is the entry requirement. That means pre-licensing coursework, a state exam, a background check, and appointments with the companies whose products you offer. Timelines vary by state.
After that, the real ramp is skill: knowing what to say, who to say it to, and how to keep a calendar full without anyone assigning you work.
The honest tradeoff
You trade certainty for control. Nobody sets your hours, and nobody guarantees your income. If that tradeoff sounds like relief, this may be worth exploring. If it sounds like anxiety, that is useful information too.

Common questions
Is this employment?
No. This is an independent, commission-based business path. It is not a salaried job and nothing on this site is an offer of employment.
Do I need a finance background?
No. Most people come from other fields entirely. What matters more is willingness to learn the material and comfort talking with people.
Can I start part-time?
Many people do, while keeping their current job through licensing and the early months. It works when the weekly hours are real and protected.
Opportunities described on this site are independent, licensed, commission-based business paths requiring state licensing, not offers of salaried employment. No specific results or income are promised or implied.
